The DC Universe is getting exciting again! James Gunn and Peter Safran are at the helm and taking it into a new era. After Superman’s big box office success, making $220 million worldwide in its opening weekend, Warner Bros. DC Studios is moving fast. The biggest news since Gunn announced a new Wonder Woman movie is that the studio is speeding up the project. This could be the next movie to drop in the DC Universe’s “Gods and Monsters” lineup. According to Variety and ScreenRant, this is big for fans who want to see Diana Prince, the Amazonian warrior, back on the big screen.
In June 2025, Gunn announced a Wonder Woman movie was in development. This is different from the HBO Max series Paradise Lost which explores the history of Themyscira. At the time Gunn said the script was being written. Fans were excited but wanted to know more. Now Variety says DC Studios is focusing on the Wonder Woman movie instead of a Superman sequel. That’s surprising since Superman did so well, making $122 million in its opening weekend which is the third biggest of 2025.
This shows how important Wonder Woman is to DC’s plan to get all its big heroes together and build a movie universe.Warner Bros is putting Wonder Woman on a fast track because they believe in the new direction of the DC Universe under Gunn and Safran. They took over in 2022 after several DCEU movies like The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom didn’t do well. The 2017 Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot was a big hit with critics and at the box office. It made $103.3 million in its opening weekend in the US and made Diana a household name in pop culture.
The 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984 got mixed reviews. When Gunn and Safran took over they cancelled the planned third film with Gadot. It’s not clear if Gadot will return as Diana but the new Wonder Woman will be part of the new DC Universe which will include David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
ScreenRant says they might start casting for the new Wonder Woman in 2025 or 2026. Filming will begin after Gunn and Safran sign off on the script. This is a fast timeline so the movie could be in theaters as early as 2027 after Supergirl and Clayface in 2026. The Paradise Lost series is still in production and could add more to Themyscira which would help set up Wonder Woman’s return to the big screen.
The success of Superman with its heartwarming story and Gunn’s humor has DC Studios wanting to compete with the MCU. Warner Bros. chose to go with Wonder Woman which means they want to use more of their iconic characters and heroes. As the DC Universe is gearing up for a new Justice League movie the quick production of a Wonder Womanmovie could be big. It’ll be a new but true to character Wonder Woman that fans have been waiting for.
